Visions of the future

If the present is bad, the future will be much worse. Its roots are in science and technology, exactly the two forces that promise comfort and happiness. Three fates await man: 1. declining living standards; 2. almost total destruction of the planet and barbarism; 3. the anti-utopia: the totalitarian State which keeps an eye on the citizens and conditions them, and in case of disagreement eliminates them. The perfect and eternal State. The perfect nightmare. This is the future showed by the 20th century science fiction literature, illustration, and cinema.
